Swedish tall case clock, circa 1800, with floral carving. The roses on on the "bridal" crown are repeated with a bow at the throat and around the pendulum window. On the hip is a curved detail reminiscent of the peplum of the bride's dress. The case features early paint and a beautiful teardrop shaped door. Exceptional example of a rococo tall case clock from the village of Mora, Sweden, circa 1780. In excellent original condition and retaining its original painted surface, this clock features a carved "crown" and beaded detail at the neck, belly, and base. The hand-painted face is signed "Mora." The works are freshly cleaned and adjusted with missing parts hand-fabricated. Carved tall case clock from Norrbotten in northeast Sweden, ca.1790. The carving at the base shows the display of spread tail feathers of the blackcock, or European grouse. Further up the clock, two blackcocks are shown on potted evergreens, one flanked by two admiring hens. Wonderful carving and rich color. - Mora Clock Dated 1841
Swedish Mora clock dated 1841 retaining its wonderful painted decoration. The scenes on the body and base of the clock express the peasants' dissatisfaction with their French-born king, Charles XIV Johan, represented by the soldier who takes his whip to the Swedish people, shown as an ox who turns his head away. Over all flies a cuckoo, the bird which lays her eggs in another's nest. Below a cock calls the farmers to awake. (Though the Swedish Riksdag considered calling for the king's abdication, he survived the controversy and celebrated his Silver Jubilee in 1843.)
